October 31, 2000Missouri Widow Steps Into Spotlight Gov. Mel Carnahan once said his private and public partnership with wife Jean was side-by-side, ``except for those times when I have to run to keep up.''
Now Jean Carnahan - civic volunteer, fledgling author and die-hard Democrat - may become the next U.S. Senator from Missouri, announcing Monday that she would accept an appointment if voters choose her late husband over Republican incumbent Sen. John Ashcroft next week.
Jean Carnahan, 66, has never held or run for elective office. But she spent four decades in the political spotlight at the side of Gov. Mel
Carnahan and friends say there is no one better to carry out his dreams.
Mrs. Carnahan is ``the best person to pick up where he left off, because she knew exactly what he was doing and exactly where he was going and his very personal feelings on how to get there,'' said Susie Skelton, who served on the board of William Woods University in Fulton, Mo., with Mrs. Carnahan. ``She will not just be a name.''
The latest national and state polls
The latest national and state polls on the presidential race. When results don't total 100 percent, the remainder either declined to answer or backed another candidate.
Suppose the election for president were being held today and you had to choose between Al Gore and Joseph Lieberman, the Democrats; George W. Bush and Dick Cheney, the Republicans; Ralph Nader and Winona LaDuke, the Green Party candidates, and Pat Buchanan and Ezola Foster, the Reform Party candidates. For whom would you vote?
