VeraSun Energy Begins Operations

The nation’s largest, new-technology, dry-grind ethanol plant began operation this week in Aurora, South Dakota. VeraSun Energy’s 100mgy (million gallons per year) plant is a state-of-the-art facility, designed to lower the energy use and production costs associated with ethanol production.

Less than eleven months from the close of financing, VeraSun produced its first gallon of ethanol. Synergies that developed between VeraSun’s management and the engineering and construction teams of ICM, Inc. and Fagen, Inc. accelerated the plant startup, initially targeted for March 2004.

According to Don Endres, VeraSun’s CEO, “We are very pleased to announce the early startup of the plant. This facility will create the largest new corn market in the region while increasing America’s energy security by reducing our reliance on foreign oil. Every gallon of ethanol we ship from this plant represents one less gallon of gasoline this nation will import from abroad. We look forward to working with the industry to continue the advances in production efficiencies and market development for renewable fuels.”

The plant will process more than 35 million bushels of corn to produce 100 million gallons of ethanol and 320,000 tons of animal feed (distillers grain) each year. A formal grand opening ceremony is being planned for early 2004.
