November 20, 2003Plans for N.D. ethanol plants move forward WILLISTON, N.D. - Plans are moving ahead for ethanol plants in northwestern and southwestern North Dakota.
The Williston Planning and Zoning Commission this week approved a permit for the Oregon-based Makad Corp. to build an ethanol plant in the area. The 17 million gallon plant is expected to about 40 people.
The City Commission must approve the final plans.
Planning and Zoning Commissioner Shane Peterson said his questions about odor or nuisance problems were satisfied after he visited a similar plant in Stanley, Wis.
''In a strong wind, I sat directly across from the plume. It did not bother me. It smelled like baking bread. Sometimes I got a waft of a stronger yeasty smell,'' Peterson said.
Separately, the state Agricultural Products Utilization Commission has awarded $150,000 organizers of an ethanol plant in Richardton. Red Trail Energy. LLC, is to use the money for a business plan.
