October 12, 2000StarTran to Test Ethanol-Diesel Blend Lincoln, Nebraska's municipal bus system, StarTran recently announced that it has been selected to help test an experimental fuel designed to help the city meet tougher federal clean air standards. The fuel is a blend of ethanol and diesel which researchers say will dramatically reduce engine emissions in the vehicles.
Under the one-year agreement, the four test buses will demonstrate the fuel's ability to operate under a range of environmental conditions. During the test period, each bus is expected to log about 35,000 miles, giving researchers adequate insight into the viability of such oxygenated fuels programs.
"In light of recent fuel price spikes and supply concerns, we are more determined than ever to find domestic fuel sources that are kind to the environment, reduce imports of fossil fuels and provide jobs for our citizens," said Lincoln mayor Don Wesely. "If this new fuel delivers the performance and environmental advantages we expect, Nebraska-produced ethanol will have access to the 50-billion gallon a year U.S. diesel fuel market."
The demonstration engines provided by Detroit Diesel will be fueled by a blend of 91.3 percent diesel fuel, 7.7 percent ethanol and one percent blending agent which will be provided by AAE Technologies, Inc. The test is sponsored by the Nebraska Ethanol Board, Cargill, Inc., Williams Energy Company and the Nebraska Grain Sorghum Board.
