Venezuelan Oil Workers Strike, Threatening US Oil Shipments

Thousands of Venezuelan oil workers went on strike in a contract dispute, threatening oil exports to the U.S. from one of its largest foreign suppliers.

Carlos Ortega, president of oil workers' union Fedepetrol, said large parts of Venezuela's oil industry were paralyzed by the strike that began at 6 a.m. (6 a.m. New York time).

``The workers have fully responded,'' said Ortega.

A strike by Fedepetrol could hinder production at state oil company Petroleos de Venezuela SA and cut exports to the U.S. Venezuela exports about 2.6 million barrels of oil a day, and is one of the largest suppliers of crude oil and petroleum products to the U.S.

SeaWest and Cinergy Announce Commercial OperationOf Foote Creek IV Wind Power Project

The 16.8MW Foote Creek IV Wind Power Project has initiated commercial operation as of October 2, 2000. SeaWest WindPower, Inc. and Cinergy Global Power, Ltd. signed final documents that commenced commercial energy production at the 28-wind turbine plant, providing clean, renewable electric energy to customers in the Pacific Northwest through the Bonneville Power Administration.

The Foote Creek IV project is located on the Foote Creek Rim in Arlington between Laramie and Rawlins, WY. Among the windiest places in the United States, the project captures jet stream winds and storm tracks as they drop from the Rocky Mountain Front onto the Great Plains. In 1999, the BPA, SeaWest and Cinergy completed the 1.8MW Foote Creek II project. With the addition of the Foote Creek IV project, SeaWest will supply the BPA with enough power for over 10,500 homes, with a total capacity of 18.6 megawatts from 31 turbines. The BPA is also a power purchaser from the Foote Creek I project, a 41.4MW project also located on Foote Creek Rim and owned by PacifiCorp and Eugene Water and Electric Board.
