August 29, 2003Nearly $1 million in grants going to local ethanol plant Central Illinois Energy, a cooperative formed in Fulton County to build and operate an ethanol plant 3 1/2 miles south of Canton, has been awarded two grants worth a total of nearly $1 million.
A grant of $750,000 to assist with construction of the new ethanol production facility was announced Wednesday by Gov. Rod Blagojevich. The announcement noted the plant will produce 30 million gallons of ethanol per year using waste coal while co-generating electricity on-site.
That was one of 37 grants provided through the Illinois Coal Infrastructure Program worth a total of more than $17 million.
The other grant to the ethanol plant was worth $200,000. It was provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and is to be used to pay for professional service fees associated with the construction of the facility.
This grant announcement noted the cooperative consists of 262 Illinois farmers and 118 Illinois residents who have invested as preferred shareholders. The grant was one of eight provided in Illinois, which were worth a total of $2,186,596.
