August 1, 2003Ethanol to be labelled August 2 2003

Motorists will be told exactly how much ethanol is in their petrol under national regulations that will come into effect by late October.
Federal fair trading and state consumer affairs ministers meeting in Sydney yesterday agreed to enforce mandatory labelling at petrol stations selling ethanol-blended fuel.
The Australian Automobile Association cautiously welcomed the move, but insisted that the labels should be comprehensive. Executive director Lauchlan McIntosh said he would like to see an existing Victorian label adopted for the national standard.
The Victorian Government introduced its labelling system in May, forcing petrol stations to reveal petrol mixed with ethanol levels above 10 per cent. Other states have lagged Victoria.
Since last month, a mandatory cap of 10 per cent ethanol has been imposed.
Under the national regulations, petrol retailers would have to provide information about the effect of ethanol in older cars, aircraft and boats.
The laws will come into effect by October 31.
