Vruwink Urges Doyle to Fund Ethanol Incentive Program

Wisconsin Ag Connection Editors - 07/23/2003

Wisconsin Assemblywoman Amy Sue Vruwink is urging Governor Doyle to fully fund the ethanol producers' incentive program in the state budget. In a letter to the Governor, Vruwink asked that the program to encourage the development of an ethanol industry in Wisconsin be funded at $3.9 million.

"This relatively new industry in Wisconsin needs this small investment program to enable it to grow to its fullest potential," the letter stated. "This is one area we can assist the farmer on the revenue side of their ledger. By helping ethanol producers develop this industry, our agriculture economy will greatly benefit."

The ethanol producer grant program at the Department of Agriculture provides ethanol producers who make more than 10 million gallons of ethanol in a year with a 20-cent per gallon grant for every gallon of ethanol produced. If funds are insufficient to provide grants for all eligible producers, Vruwink says DATCP would pro-rate available funds according to total ethanol produced.

Currently, the program is set to expire in 2006. Doyle is expected to sign a final budget package before the end of the month.
