July 10, 2003Group sweet on ethanol project Investors look to convert sugary syrups to additive to make gas burn cleaner
By Gloria Irwin
Beacon Journal business writer
A group of investors hopes to convert sugary syrups and other waste liquids into ethanol, an additive that is sometimes put in gasoline to make it burn cleaner.
Liquid Resources of Ohio LLC, headed by Tim Curtiss and other investors, announced Tuesday that it has signed an agreement to purchase a chemical distribution plant near the Medina County fairgrounds.
The plant would be used to produce ethanol from waste liquids from beverage and other manufacturers, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman Curtiss said.
He said it will be several months before the purchase is completed and production can begin, but Liquid Resources has an agreement with international food and agriculture giant Cargill Inc. to distribute the ethanol.
Curtiss said the investors hope to begin production by the end of the year and expects to employ 25 to 30 people once the plant is fully operating.
Curtiss, who spent 20 years working with Wall Street securities firms, said that Bolognue Holdings of Akron has agreed to become a partner in the venture.
Bolognue Holdings is headed by Joseph Bolognue. The company traces its roots to 1966, when it launched its first grocery store. Since then, it has expanded to include Sparkle, Apples and Giant Eagle supermarkets.
In May, the company announced that it intends to remain true to its business roots through partnerships with other entrepreneurial companies in various industries.
Vice President Michael Bolognue said his company was attracted to the favorable business outlook and environmental logic of Liquid Resources.
