June 26, 2003CONNECTICUT AND NEW YORK SET MTBE BANS AT YEAR END Actions by Key Northeast States Likely to Open Large Ethanol Market in 2004
Washington, DC - The Renewable Fuels Association (RFA) today predicted a large role for ethanol in the Northeast starting next year. Last week, Connecticut Governor John Rowland signed legislation aligning his state’s MTBE ban with New York, and New York state legislators ignored last-ditch efforts by MTBE industry lobbyists to delay the state’s MTBE ban. Both states now have MTBE bans effective January 1, 2004.
“Based on the actions taken last week, we certainly foresee a large and growing ethanol market in the Northeast,” said Bob Dinneen, RFA president. “Ethanol demand in New York and Connecticut alone could exceed 400 million gallons in 2004. With 73 plants online and 13 more under construction, the ethanol industry is ready to meet the demand for a safe, clean replacement for MTBE.”
With the state legislatures in New York and Connecticut adjourned, a sense of certainty returns to the marketplace. Numerous news articles have indicated that almost all refiners, terminal operators and pipelines are prepared for the switch from MTBE to ethanol.
“These two MTBE bans have been on the books since 2000 and we know petroleum companies have been laying the necessary groundwork for their implementation,” continued Dinneen. “Like the other responsible industries, ethanol producers are prepared. Even though preparation is well under way, it’s helpful to have certainty returned to the market.”
