May 28, 2003Ethanol Subsidy Petitions OK'd Opponents of the North Dakota Legislature's ethanol subsidy play now have the go-ahead -- to try to put the question on the ballot.
Secretary of State Al Jaeger approved the referendum petition today.
It's aimed at a bill that would help underwrite the cost of building a new ethanol plant in North Dakota. It sets aside 1.8 million dollars to develop a new plant.
The bill also has almost 1.3 million dollars to subsidize North Dakota's two existing ethanol plants.
Critics of the bill say it's corporate welfare. Supporters say farmers and rural North Dakota's economy will benefit from more ethanol development.
Opponents of the ethanol plan have until July 13th to turn in their petitions. They need to get signatures from 12,844 North Dakota voters.
If they're successful -- the measure will be suspended from taking effect until there's a statewide vote. That probably won't be until the June primary next year.
