East Kansas Agri-Energy, a group of 122 agricultural, business and community leaders that hopes to build an ethanol production plant in Garnett, is broadening its search for equity investors.
The group will conduct a new series of equity drive meetings in eastern and central Kansas and in western Missouri beginning next week, including a Wichita meeting Tuesday night.
The group is attempting to raise about $14.4 million from private investors by June 2 before seeking commercial financing for the remainder of the $36 million project.
The proposed plant would annually produce about 20 million gallons of the gasoline additive.
The meetings are intended to answer potential investors' questions about ethanol and offer help in completing subscription agreements.
The Garnett plant is one of several that have been proposed or built in the past two years as more and more states begin phasing out the use of the petroleum-based additive MTBE to create cleaner burning gasoline.
Ethanol, which can be made from virtually any vegetable starch, is most frequently made from corn, grain sorghum or wheat. Pending legislation in Congress would increase the use of renewable energy, doubling the amount of renewable fuels used in America.
The Wichita meeting will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Sedgwick County Extension Education Center, 7001 W 21st St.
Other meetings will be Wednesday in Emporia, Thursday in Burlington, May 6 in Ottawa, May 7 in Baldwin, May 8 in Iola, May 13 in Stilwell, May 14 in Butler, Mo., May 15 in Columbus and May 20 in Atchison.
