March 20, 2003West Virginia: Ethanol Plant to Open Near Cadiz A new ethanol plant will be constructed this year in Harrison County and will benefit not just that county, but surrounding counties as well, according to a Harrison County commissioner.
Today, Harrison County Commissioner Phil Madzia said construction of Harrison County Ethanol, LLC, will begin this year. He said the plant is an effort by a group of local farmers and the Harrison County Improvement Corporation. Madzia said he does not know how much it will cost to open the facility, but he did say it will be privately funded.
"It's going to be a reality," Madzia said. "It's going to be built south of Cadiz. They (organizers) have been doing a lot of permitting, and as soon as they get that, the ground breaking will be in 90 days. It will be this year.
"Those figures aren't out," Madzia added when asked how much the facility will cost. "It's all privately funded. It is Ohio people and farmers, and groups and they are all behind the project."
Madzia said the new plant has been in the planning stages for some time and will benefit not just Harrison County, but many surrounding counties as well. He said the plant will produce 15 million gallons of ethanol annually, and the plant will offer 100 new jobs. Madzia said commissioners are quite pleased the plant will be coming to Harrison County. "It's been in the works for quite a while," Madzia said. "It's just like we hit the lottery. Number one, the corn will be grown in a six-county area, so all the farmers will grow the corn. That's where we will get the bulk of it. Local truckers will get a boost. It's just going to be a boost all the way around.
"We are just ecstatic about the whole thing," Madzia added. "It's been hard to keep it a secret. It's going to be a big boost to the county and surrounding counties as far as farmers go. It's going take 5 million bushels of corn a year to make 15 million gallons of ethanol."
