March 17, 2003New South Dakota Ethanol Plant On Line Production began Saturday at the farmer-owned Great Plains Ethanol plant near Chancellor, S.D., according to a news release from The Renewable Fuels Association (RFA).
The Great Plains Ethanol, LLC plant will process nearly 15 million bushels of corn into 40 million gallons of ethanol and 120,000 tons of distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) annually. The plant is expected to employ 38 people.
"We congratulate the farmer-owners of Great Plains Ethanol and welcome them to the fastest growing sector of the energy business," said Bob Dinneen, RFA president, to the crowd assembled for the official grand opening.
"At a time of tight fuel supplies, companies like Great Plains Ethanol are working increase our domestic fuel production. With today's grand opening, there are now 70 ethanol plants producing domestic, renewable fuels. Only two decades ago ethanol was considered a novelty. But today, ethanol is a necessity - blended into approximately 20% of fuel throughout the country as a vital high- octane, clean-burning blending component. With a sound energy policy, including an aggressive renewable fuels standard, there's no limit for ethanol growth over the next two decades."
The plant was designed and built by The Broin Companies of Sioux Falls, S.D. "Great Plains is creating a new market for area corn supplies, providing new, highly technical job positions, and will spend millions of dollars in its operations. The Broin Companies are very excited to bring this world class facility into full production," said Jeff Broin, Broin Companies CEO.
Currently, 70 ethanol plants nationwide have the capacity to produce over 2.7 billion gallons annually, RFA said. There are ten ethanol plants under construction.
