September 22, 2000American Lung Association of Minnesota Receives Governor's Award For Excellence The American Lung Association of Minnesota (ALAMN) and the Minnesota E85 team have received the Governor's Award for Excellence in Waste and Pollution Prevention for their part in bringing E85 motor fuel to Minnesotans. The team is working to educate consumers the public about this cleaner, renewable motor fuel that may be used in new flexible fuel vehicles. This annual award honors Minnesota businesses, public institutions and organizations that use creative approaches to reduce the use and release of hazardous and toxic materials at the source. Thomas Niemann of Ford Motor Company's Environmental Outreach & Strategy Division, was the keynote speaker.
Minnesota E85 team members include the Minnesota Corn Growers Association, Minnesota Coalition for Ethanol, the Minnesota Department of Commerce, the Minnesota Department of Agriculture, Ford Motor Company, the US Department of Energy and the National Ethanol Vehicle Coalition. "We will continue to be a resource for new E85 retailers, but even more importantly we must raise public awareness of E85 as a renewable, clean air choice," said Tim Gerlach, director of Outdoor Air programs at ALAMN. Presently, more than 45,000 E85 capable vehicles are registered in Minnesota. The E85 Team has helped construct more than 45 fueling stations for E85 in the Twin Cities and in Greater Minnesota.
The American Lung Association of Minnesota began its Clean Air Fuels Education Alliance (CAFE) to improve outdoor air quality by encouraging consumers to use new, cleaner fuels and vehicle technologies for reducing our impact on the environment and on human health. By using their marketplace power to make Clean Air Choices, consumers can influence the development and further production of more environmentally and health friendly products and services.
