PA Departments of Agriculture, Environmental Protection SponsorEthanol Workshop
Agriculture Secretary Samuel E. Hayes Jr. today welcomed guests to "Ethanol for a Cleaner, More Prosperous Pennsylvania," a workshop at the Holiday Inn Harrisburg-Hershey. The Department of Agriculture, along with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Fuels Development, sponsored the one-day workshop.
"High fuel costs and increased dependency on imported oil have sparked renewed interest in the production of clean-burning alternative fuels for Pennsylvania and its citizens, businesses and industry," Hayes said. "Ethanol is extremely important as an agribusiness product. This workshop offers Pennsylvania agribusinesses a look at the 21st century answer to today's need for developing cleaner, environmentally friendly fuels."
RFA Encourages U.S. Congress to Support Domestic, Alternative FuelsTo Reduce U.S. Dependence on Foreign Oil and Iraq
The U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee met yesterday to study the U.S. policy toward Iraq. Currently, the Clinton Administration is calling for a war crimes tribunal for Saddam Hussein in the deaths of 100,000 to 250,000 civilians in Iraq, Iran, Kuwait and elsewhere. Hussein is also threatening Kuwait, claiming Kuwait is digging border wells to steal Iraqi oil. Secretary of Defense William Cohen is warning Iraq the U.S. is prepared to take any necessary action to prevent him from again threatening his neighbors.
This latest Middle East confrontation plays out in front of a backdrop of a global energy crisis. Oil prices rose nearly a dollar a barrel on Monday and hit a new 10-year high of nearly $37 per barrel. U.S. demand for imported oil is so strong, the fastest growing source of U.S. oil imports is Iraq to the tune of over $75 million of oil per day.
Eric Vaughn, president of the Renewable Fuels Association (RFA) and former White House policy advisor for national energy security, made the following statement concerning today's hearing and world headlines:
"If the U.S. does not take quick, bold action to boost the use of domestic energy sources, we are in jeopardy of seeing history repeat itself. Reading today's headlines is like stepping back in time. Saddam Hussein is again accusing Kuwait of stealing oil. In 1990, this accusation led to war. Like then, the U.S. today is threatening a military response if Iraq acts."
