September 14, 2000Sugar farmers see oil prices as spur to ethanol
South Africa - Sugar farmers were urged on Wednesday to take advantage of the recent oil price spike to press governments to look at ethanol as a fuel additive to help stabilise the sugar market and limit pollution.
Speakers from Brazil and France told delegates from 26 sugar-producing nations at the Seventh World Sugar Farmers conference in Durban that the surge in oil prices to 10-year highs offered a good opportunity to push governments to consider setting up ethanol producing plants.
"The oil crisis now is a very good time to reveal to our governments that crude oil can be very expensive and the development of bio-fuels can reduce the dependency on crude oil," said Alain Jeanroy, Director General of the Sugar Beet Growers Association in France.
