September 13, 2000WITH CRUDE OIL PRICES AT 10-YEAR HIGHS, CLINTON PLEADS WITH OPEC, BUT IGNORES HOME-GROWN SOLUTIONS
With the U.S. confronted by ten-year high crude oil prices, Eric Vaughn has urged President Bill Clinton to shift his focus from imported oil to domestic energy alternatives. Vaughn argued the U.S. should look first to renewable sources of energy, like domestic ethanol, before increasing our huge dependence on foreign oil.
"We need a 'U.S. fuels first' energy policy, not a 'foreign oil first' energy policy," said Vaughn, president of the Renewable Fuels Association (RFA). "Instead of going hat in hand to Saudi Arabia pleading for more foreign oil, President Clinton needs to make the increased use of domestic energy, like ethanol, his top energy priority. Our energy policy should not be based on a quick fix. We need strong leadership."
