November 27, 2002Westfall honored for work with ethanol By Murray Bishoff
Managing Editor
Outgoing state senator recognized during Missouri Corn Growers Association annual meeting
Morris Westfall, retiring state senator from Halfway who has represented Lawrence County until retired due to term limits after the 2002 session, were among those honored with a Public Servant of the Year Award from the Missouri Corn Growers Association at its annual meeting on November 17 in Osage Beach.
The association met in conjunction with the Missouri Governor's Conference on Agriculture.
Westfall, a Republican, is a cattleman himself, and served in the pivotal position of chairman of the Senate's transportation committee during the last General Assembly. He is being honored for his work toward permanent funding of the state's ethanol program.
Also being honored were State Senator John Cauthorn of Mexico for being instrumental in passing the omnibus ag legislation, and State Representative Bill Ransdall of Waynesville, for being an outspoken advocate of ethanol.
During the business meeting, Paul Gross of Corder was sworn in to another three-year term to represent southwest Missouri from District Four.
Brent Rockhold, MCGA president from Arbela, summarized accomplishments of the association, commenting, "In my opinion, the year 2002 was one of the most successful years in our 25-year history in terms of legislation passed. The Missouri Corn Growers Association joined others to lobby successfully for a new farm bill and trade promotion authority from Congress. We were also able to lay a good legislative foundation in the energy bill for a national renewable fuels standard that would nearly triple ethanol production over the next 10 years."
