November 19, 2002Augusta Ethanol Plant Proposed by Stonic Energy Wisconsin Ag Connection Editors - 11/19/2002
We now know who the unidentified group is that wants to build an ethanol plant in Augusta. On Monday night, Stonic Energy--the same company that earlier proposed building a facility in Menomonie--discussed their ideas during a public hearing with the Augusta Planning Commission.
The company is considering two locations, both on the East side of the Eau Claire County community. The zoning panel did not take any action during last night's meeting on whether to rezone the parcels, but is expected to come up with a recommendation before the next city council meeting in early December.
Supporters of the plant say the project would create about 30 jobs in the area and further boost the prices paid to local corn growers. But like many other recent ethanol projects in Wisconsin, there is some opposition to the plant from local residents.
As Wisconsin Ag Connection reported last month, a board of zoning appeals has turned down a conditional use permit for Stonic Energy's proposed ethanol plant near Menomonie. Many suspect that decision lead to the company efforts to develop plans in Augusta.
