November 8, 2002Ethanol workshops planned here The Hawaii Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism has scheduled a series of workshops to explain the costs and benefits of ethanol as a fuel, beginning with a main event Nov. 14 that will be sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy.
"This is a national caliber event, but it will focus on our local issues and resources," said DBEDT director Seiji Naya. "The agenda was developed to answer the questions of most interest to the Hawaii audience."
Featured speakers include representatives from the U.S. Department of Energy, General Motors, and ConocoPhillips as well as industry organizations, fuel production experts, researchers, and regulators.
Ethanol is currently being added to gasoline in 45 of the 50 states, primarily to reduce automotive emissions. It initially was known as a "muscle car" fuel that wore out engines but Naya says it now has a good track record and is well-understood as an automotive fuel.
In addition to the main workshop, free evening classes for automative service technicians will be held as follows:
Nov. 11
Maui Community College, Hawaii Community College (Kona), Hawaii Community College (Manono), Kauai Community College.
Nov. 13
Honolulu Community College.
Nov. 14
Ala Moana Hotel, Honolulu.
