September 8, 2000RFA ENCOURAGED BY PASSAGE OF SENATE EPW COMMITTEE LEGISLATION TO BAN MTBE AND ESTABLISH CLEAN FUELS PROGRAM
The U.S. Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, chaired by Senator Bob Smith (R-NH), today passed legislation (11 to 6) to ban MTBE in four years and create a national Clean Alternative Fuel Program which could triple the demand for ethanol over the next ten years.
Eric Vaughn, president of the Renewable Fuels Association (RFA) made the following statement in response to passage of the Smith legislation:
"Chairman Smith, Ranking Member Baucus and the Committee are to be commended for crafting legislation to remove toxic MTBE from our gasoline and, ultimately, our drinking water. The passage of this bill sends a clear signal to the marketplace that MTBE's days are numbered. It is time for oil refiners and gasoline blenders to switch from MTBE to safe, renewable ethanol. Today's action to ban MTBE addresses a top concern of nearly 100 separate environmental groups led by Blue Water Network that wouldn't let this issue be forgotten."
Better Fuel for a Clean Air Choice; American Lung Association of MinnesotaAnnounces Fuel Rebate
The American Lung Association of Minnesota (ALAMN) announced a new Clean Air Choice fuel awareness program in conjunction with Metro Commuter Services. To kick off the program $15.00 will be awarded to Flexible Fuel Vehicle (FFV) drivers for every 85 gallons of E85 that they purchase. Prizes will be awarded to the top fuel promoters as well. E85 is a motor fuel which uses a blend of 85% ethanol and just 15% petroleum. It is used in FFVs and burns cleaner than gasoline.
The Twin Cities metro area is a national pilot market for E85 and FFVs. The team working on the project anticipates that more than 50,000 FFVs will be operating in Minnesota by the end of 2000. Our local, state, and federal agencies, including the U.S. Postal Service, U.S. General Services Administration, and the State of Minnesota are using E85 powered FFVs.
