June 3, 2002Alltech planning to build biorefinery in Springfield Alltech Inc., a Nicholasville, Ky.-based biotechnology company, has opened a new production and research center in Springfield, Ky., that initially will employ about 20 workers at an average wage of about $30,000 per year.
Alltech's new operations, which include a research and development facility, are located in an 85,000-square-foot facility in the Kerry/Armour Building in Springfield, according to a news release from the Kentucky Cabinet for Economic Development.
Alltech's plans include eventually building a "biorefinery," which would be capable of producing a number of products from natural resources. The facility would be used to process corn, wheat and other grains into soy-based diesel and ethanol, the release said.
"Implementing the biorefinery concept would put Kentucky at the forefront of a new era of agriculture-based technology that ensure a future for many in the agriculture industry," Alltech president Pearse Lyons, said in the release. "We are committed to bringing this concept to reality for the benefit of the state's farmers and economy."
