May 23, 2002Columbia Co. village delays vote on ethanol plant permit Associated Press
ARLINGTON, Wis. -- The Village Board postponed action on a permit for a $57 million ethanol plant after the Madison Audubon Society filed an appeal questioning a village commission's decision to recommend issuing the permit.
The Village Board was scheduled Monday to discuss the permit for United Wisconsin Grain Producers, a Beaver Dam group of grain farmers. The proposed plant would produce 40 million gallons of ethanol a year in the Columbia County village.
Village Attorney Paul Johnson ruled the village's zoning appeals board must deal with the appeal before the board can act on the permit. An appeal hearing likely will take place in the next two weeks.
The village's plan commission voted two weeks ago to recommend issuing the permit. The Audubon Society said in its appeal the commission "acted without proper evidence and guarantees" as required under a village ordinance.
The Audubon Society owns a wildlife sanctuary about a mile from the village's industrial park, the proposed site for the plant.
"We are concerned the plant will have a negative impact on our wildlife sanctuary," said Marsha Cannon, past president of the society.
Kevin Roche, chairman of United Wisconsin Grain Producers, said the delay does not faze the group.
"We are in this for the long run," Roche said. "These concerns have been raised before, and we will answer all of the concerns."
