April 23, 2002Revised Data Shows U.S. Ethanol Industry Set Monthly Production Records for January, February, and March Over 129,000 Barrels per Day of Ethanol Produced in March
WASHINGTON, DC –The Renewable Fuels Association has announced the U.S. ethanol industry set a monthly production record in March of 129,000 barrels per day (b/d), according to data released by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). March’s record was 14 percent higher than the previous March record of 113,000 b/d set in 2001.
“This data reaffirms the ethanol industry’s ability and commitment to meet the increased production called for under the renewable fuels standard,” said Bob Dinneen, RFA president. “The Senate is engaged in a debate over an energy policy that includes a bold, new program to expand the production and use of renewable fuels like ethanol. Critics have questioned the ethanol industry’s ability to supply the new demand. Clearly, the ethanol industry has demonstrated that production concerns are unfounded.”
The EIA also released revised data today for ethanol production from January and February. The independent agency increased January production from the previously reported 128,000 b/d to a new all-time record of 136,000 b/d. Production was also revised upward to a new February record of 122,000 b/d from the previously reported 114,000 b/d.
The ethanol industry is expected to produce an annual record of approximately 2.2 billion gallons in 2002. Production capacity continues to grow with 14 ethanol plants under construction constituting more than 400 million gallons of additional annual production capacity. Currently, 61 existing plants can produce more than 2.35 million gallons per year.
