March 25, 2002SASKATCHEWAN RENEWABLE FUELS MANDATE A WIN-WIN Legislation a first in Canada
Ottawa - Jeff Passmore, Executive Vice President of Iogen Corporation, today welcomed the introduction of enabling legislation by the government of Saskatchewan mandating that gasoline in the province contain a minimum percentage of renewable fuel.
" This is a good step for the government of Saskatchewan, and a first for Canada," says Mr. Passmore. "A Renewable Fuels mandate will reduce green house gas emissions and spur economic growth. It's a win-win for everyone."
The Saskatchewan Mandate will permit the government to fix a percent of ethanol that must be blended in gasoline. The percent will be determined by the availability of ethanol produced in the province, but, as Passmore points out, " The very fact of the mandate will motivate ethanol production in the province."
Similar Renewable Fuels mandates are also currently being considered in the United States and the European Union. Ethanol, a viable renewable fuel, is a booming industry in the U.S. already, with 192,000 jobs created to date. The U.S. has a target of 19 billion litres of ethanol and 300,000 jobs by 2012.
In Canada, numerous retailers such as Sunoco, Husky, and MacEwen already blend ethanol in their gasoline.
" It is our hope that we will soon see similar measures adopted across the country. A national mandate would allow Canada to develop a home grown solution to the our aggressive Kyoto targets and create jobs at the same time," Passmore says.
Iogen is the recognized world leader of bioethanol, a clean alternative fuel. It is in the process of developing the first commercially viable bioethanol plant. Independent government studies have concluded that bioethanol can reduce green house gas emissions by up to 90% compared to gasoline. Bioethanol can be used in every car on the road today.
