Longview slated for ethanol plant and up to 100 jobs

SEATTLE - Nordic Biofuels LLC said Wednesday it will build a $150 million ethanol manufacturing plant in Longview, bringing as many as 100 new jobs to the Cowlitz County community.
The plant will annually produce 84 million gallons of ethanol, a gasoline additive produced from corn that helps reduce vehicle emissions. Byproducts from making the ethanol include 250,000 tons of distilled dry grains, used as livestock feed, and 200,000 tons of carbon dioxide, which will be captured and sold to soft drink bottling companies and medical facilities.
The Nordic plant will use about 30 million bushels of corn per year as raw material for production. That's more corn than currently produced annually in Washington and Oregon combined, the Vancouver, Wash.-based company said.
Nordic said the plant will be located on a reclaimed industrial site at the Port of Longview, with rail, dock and highway access. The company said it is working with the port and other government agencies on funding improvements to the site's rail access.
The ethanol plant is now in the design and permitting stage. Groundbreaking is scheduled for this spring, and plant start up is slated for spring 2003.
Nordic Biofuels is a subsidiary of Ann Arbor, Mich.-based Nordic Energy LLC, a privately held independent power producer that has built more than a dozen electricity-generating plants throughout the country.
