February 14, 2002CHINA BEGINS WORK ON ETHANOL PLANT
MUMBAI: In pursuance of its plan to introduce indigenously produced ethanol out of maize (corn) and blended with petrol or diesel for use as vehicle fuel, China has started to construct its first ethanol plant.
Started in November 2001, the plant, in Jilin province, which is a major grain-growing region of north-east China, is expected to use close to two million tons of maize a year and produce some six lakh tonnes of ethanol. It will be blended with petrol or diesel to fuel vehicles.
Studies are also being carried out to ascertain the feasibility of constructing two other fuel ethanol plants in China. Under the current 5-year Plan (2001-05) the Government is encouraging the use of fuel ethanol.
China is the world's second largest producer of maize after the US, with output dipping to some 110 million tonnes in last two years.
