January 8, 2002SIOUXLAND ENERGY AND LIVESTOCK COOP BEGINS ETHANOL PRODUCTION IN SIOUX CENTER, IOWA Iowa is Home to 8 Ethanol Plants and 6 Under Construction
WASHINGTON, DC - The U.S. ethanol industry picked up in 2002 where it left off in 2001 -- continuing the industry’s record expansion. The Renewable Fuels Association (RFA) today congratulated the farmer-owners of Siouxland Energy and Livestock Coop for beginning production at their new 14 million gallon per year ethanol plant in Sioux Center, Iowa. The plant is co-located next to a 10,000 head cattle feedlot providing Siouxland Energy a market for some of its feed co-products. The remainder of the distillers’ dried grains will be marketed throughout northwest Iowa.
“Farmers across this country see ethanol as a way to capture more of the value-added benefits of their commodities,” said Bob Dinneen, president of the RFA. “Siouxland Energy continues the trend of farmer involvement in the record growth of the ethanol industry. Over the last four or five years, it’s been the commitment of farmers coupled with their desire to improve the environment and U.S. energy security that has propelled the ethanol industry to double-digit rates of growth.”
Since 2000, more than a dozen ethanol production facilities have opened and several major expansions to existing facilities have been completed. Today, 58 ethanol plants have the capacity to produce over 2.3 billion gallons per year. There are 16 ethanol plants currently under construction that encompass over 430 million gallons of new production capacity. Dozens of additional production facilities across the country are in various stages of development, engineering and financing.
“Our mission is to add value to our farmers’ bottom line,” said Bernie Punt, general manager of Siouxland Energy. “The ethanol plant will increase revenue for farmers by allowing them to deliver high-moisture corn to the plant and providing access to high-quality feed co-products. Of course, our farmer-owners also benefit from the value-added nature of converting corn to ethanol.”
