August 3, 2000Ethanol Venture in Spain Spanish applied engineering firm Abengoa and sugar company Azucarera Ebro Agricolas said on Thursday they had formed a 50-50 joint venture to produce ethanol from burning cereal and beet waste.
The two firms will invest 21 billion pesetas ($114.3 million) in a plant that is expected to generate annual sales of 18.5 billion pesetas, producing 200 million litres of ethanol per year to be used to mix with lead-free petrol.
AEA said 100 million litres of ethanol would be produced by cereal fermentation and the same amount again from biomass.
The plant will also produce 94,800 tonnes per year of distillers dried grain, a high-protein by-product for use in animal feed and 156,000 tonnes per year of carbon dioxide for soft drinks.
It will consume 300,000 tonnes per year of wheat, barley and sugar beet and 435,000 tonnes per year of biomass, or farm and forest residues.
