July 31, 2000Ford to Raise Fuel Economy of SUVs Ford Motor Co. said it will raise the average fuel economy on its SUVs in the United States by 25 percent by 2005.
Ford Chief Executive Officer Jac Nasser will announce the goals in a speech in Washington, where Congress is considering regulations to raise the fleet average fuel economy of light trucks to 27.5 miles per gallon, the mark required for car fleets, from 20.7 mpg.
"SUV customers are asking for more fuel-efficient vehicles. Our strategy is to maintain and enhance the function of their SUVs while making substantial fuel economy improvements," Nasser said in a copy of the speech.
FTC Investigation of Big Oil
The statement came in an FTC status report on its investigation into whether oil companies colluded to gouge Midwestern motorists.
The FTC estimated it will take until after the November elections to finish work on what has become one of the season's hottest political issues.
``At this point, no conclusions, however tentative, have been reached,'' the report said.
Gas prices increased throughout the country this spring as high crude oil prices led to an unusually tight supply situation. But in Chicago, Milwaukee and Detroit, prices rose well above the $2 mark - as much as 65 cents a gallon above the national average.
