October 22, 2001ADVISORY/California Energy Situation ''Working together for solutions ... ethanol''
Officials from the California Renewable Fuels Partnership, the National Corn Growers Association and other energy experts will be meeting the week of October 22 with California state officials and California agricultural groups to discuss options for best addressing California's current energy situation. The purpose of the meetings is to:
-Gain a better understanding of the energy situation in California
-Discuss the role and importance of ethanol and renewables in meeting the state's energy needs
-Discuss the ethanol production opportunities in California
-Discuss the ethanol production capacity in the Midwest and the options for distribution to California
This is an opportunity to learn more about the California energy situation and the steps being taken by the state to ensure adequate supplies of clean burning fuel are available for state's citizens. Key decisions are currently being made by California state officials and this is an opportunity for media to better understand the decisions and how they will benefit California's consumers and economy.
The state of California has banned MTBE, an oxygenate that has been used as a fuel additive to meet the federal Clean Air requirements, and has been found to pollute ground water. The NCGA, which represents the nation's corn growers, applauds this positive step California has taken to protect the environment. California's action broadens opportunities for the ethanol industry in California. New ethanol plants can be built to meet the state's needs as California phases out MTBE as an oxygenate by the target date of 2003.
