July 27, 2000Ethanol may be relief valve for excess U.S. sugar The "most likely longer-term solution" to U.S. sugar surpluses could involve converting the sugar to ethanol in the United States and Mexico, a U.S. sugar industry group said on Wednesday.
The prospect of a large crop has driven down domestic sugar prices and prompted the Agriculture Department to buy 132,000 short tons of sugar in an attempt to bolster prices. Still, growers are expected to forfeit large amounts of sugar to the government.
Ethanol production would absorb sugar surpluses, reduce reliance on petroleum, reduce air pollution in Mexico City and provide replacement jobs for workers now employed at sugar plants.
