August 9, 2001GLACIAL LAKES ENERGY BREAKS GROUND ON ETHANOL PLANT IN SOUTH DAKOTA South Dakota Now Boasts 4 Ethanol Plants and 3 Under Construction
The Renewable Fuels Association (RFA) congratulated the farmer-owners of Glacial Lakes Energy, LLC who broke ground recently on a 40 million gallon per year ethanol production facility in Watertown, South Dakota. The plant is expected to be in operation by September of 2002 and will employ 33 people. Fagen, Inc. - the Granite Falls, Minnesota design- build contractor - is spearheading the project. Fagen has participated in over 20 ethanol projects.
"The farmer-owners of Glacial Lakes are committed to growing the ethanol industry," said Bob Dinneen, president of the RFA. "They are to be commended and I welcome them to the most exciting industry in the energy field. The dramatic growth of the ethanol industry during the last few years is a direct result of farmers working together to provide a value-added market for their crops."
Since 1999, more than a dozen ethanol production facilities have opened and six major expansions to existing facilities were completed. Today, 57 ethanol plants can produce over 2 billion gallons per year. There are eleven additional ethanol plants under construction with a combined annual capacity of 245 million gallons, 34 existing companies undergoing expansion totaling 235 million additional gallons, and dozens of additional proposed production facilities across the country in various stages of development, engineering and financing. Annual ethanol production capacity is expected to reach 3.5 billion gallons during 2003.
"The ethanol industry will grow to meet any demand," said Dinneen. "We are building and expanding plants at a record pace. We are breaking monthly ethanol production records. And the pace is picking up. The demand for safe, domestic energy has never been stronger. Ethanol use is growing from coast to coast. That's good news for farmers, consumers, and the environment."
