July 16, 2001Clean Air Seminar To Be Held at University of South Florida Campus at 1 p.m. Today A seminar and workshop sponsored by the Center for Urban Transportation Research and the Sun Coast Clean City Coalition will be held on the University of South Florida Campus in Tampa, Florida at the Center for Urban Transportation Research Building (#24C) located on the corner of Alumni Drive and Laurel today at 1:00 p.m.
Part of President George W. Bush's Energy Plan calls for more use of alternative fuels (such as biodiesel, a new fuel produced from renewable resources like soybean oil) as a means of significantly reducing air pollution.
The attendees, from all across the United States, will witness a live demonstration of the clean burning characteristics of biodiesel. The fuel, which causes exhaust to smell like popcorn or French fries, will be tested in a heavy-duty truck diesel engine and a diesel generator by technicians brought in by RxP Products, Inc. of St. Petersburg and Ward Oil Company, Inc. of Tampa.
In attendance will be biodiesel manufacturers, an ethanol distiller, environmentalists, representatives from the Florida Department of Transportation and Hillsborough County Environmental Protection Agency, Senator Bill Nelson (or representatives from his office), representatives from the National Biodiesel Board, oil company representatives and other interested parties.
The purpose of this seminar is to get the word out to the general public that something is being done to reduce air pollution, help the environment and keep energy costs in check.
Gas Prices Decline as Supplies Rise
Gasoline prices dropped nearly 13 cents in the past three weeks as supplies rose, an analyst said Sunday.
The average price of gasoline, including all grades and taxes, was $1.51 Friday - down 12.8 cents since June 22, according to the Lundberg Survey of about 8,000 gas stations nationwide.
As a result of the price drops, consumers are paying 16 cents a gallon less than they were a year ago.
Crude oil prices went up during the same three-week period, but not enough to counter the price drop brought on by an increase in production for summer driving.
The national weighted average price of gasoline, including taxes at self-serve pumps Friday was $1.46 for regular unleaded, $1.57 for midgrade and $1.66 for premium. Full-service pump prices averaged at $1.88 for regular unleaded, $1.97 for midgrade and $2.05 for premium.
