May 7, 2001Ethanol Industry Helps Reduce Energy Crunch Tight control of petroleum supplies and reduced refining capacity nationwide is sending gasoline prices soaring as we approach the high-demand summer driving season. The good news is that without record production of ethanol, gasoline would be even more expensive, according to Ron Fitchhorn, Illinois Corn Growers Association president of McLean.
The U.S. Energy Information Administration reports the ethanol industry set its 18th straight monthly production record this Spring in an attempt to combat high gas prices while also raising farm income. The ethanol industry provides more than 113,000 barrels of ethanol a month and the potential remains largely untapped.
"We can't build ethanol production capacity or boost refinery capacity fast enough to head off high prices this summer. But long term, ethanol is a great step toward addressing our growing energy needs," said Fitchhorn.
The U.S. hasn't built a new petroleum refinery in 25 years. This lack of expansion is despite more than $10.7 billion in oil industry tax breaks in the last decade, according to U.S. General Accounting Office data. Conversely, the ethanol industry has constructed 61 ethanol plants to meet growing public demand.
