May 4, 2001U.S. could decide Calif. fuel waiver in May The Bush administration may decide this month on California's controversial request for a waiver allowing the state to bypass federal fuel oxygen requirements, Agriculture Secretary Ann Veneman told reporters on Tuesday.
Veneman said California's plan to reduce its dependence on MTBE, a fuel additive that reduces toxic emissions by increasing oxygen content, was a "very difficult issue."
"The administration has not taken a position," Veneman said. "I think (a decision) will probably be made before the end of this month.
