MTBE Cleanup

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Carol Browner on Thursday announced the federal government would fund two $1 million pilot projects in California and New York to aid the cleanup of gasoline additive MTBE in water supplies.

The cleanup efforts are to focus on areas of Long Island, N.Y. and Santa Monica, Calif, which the agency said were most affected by the problem.

"To protect the public health and the environment, the Clinton-Gore administration has called on Congress to eliminate MTBE from gasoline, we've begun regulatory action aimed at phasing it out," Browner said in a statement.

"However, in the meantime, action must be taken to help communities already affected by MTBE leaks."

Methyl tertiary butyl ether, or MTBE, has contaminated water supplies and may cause cancer.

The additive is a key component in some states' clean air programs when used as a gasoline blend. EPA has estimated the cost of cleanups could run into hundreds of millions of dollars as communities seek to protect themselves.

New York is being awarded $1 million to accelerate cleanup at 50 MTBE-contaminated sites on Long Island. Funds for Santa Monica were earmarked to help the state and the city with the cleanup of MTBE-contaminated groundwater.

Last month, the city of Santa Monica announced it was suing 18 oil companies for damages, charging the firms polluted city drinking water wells with MTBE.
