April 12, 2001Deer Valley School Buses Pass Four Million Mile Mark On Southern States Power Biodiesel Fuel Southern States Power Company, Inc. have announced that Arizona's Deer Valley Unified School District buses have driven over four million miles using the company's biodiesel fuel. With mounting evidence that harmful emissions from conventional diesel engines pose a significant health risk to America's children, numerous school districts have begun a push to replace polluting diesel fuel with cleaner alternatives. Southern States Power's proven track record providing biofuel for school bus fleets makes the company an ideal candidate to fulfill the growing demand for alternative fuel.
Southern States' biodiesel program for school districts reduces the risk of conventional biodiesel emissions without the higher cost of other alternative fuel sources such as compressed natural gas (CNG), liquefied natural gas (LNG) or propane. In addition to Deer Valley, the largest school district in Arizona, several districts in California, including the mammoth Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), are considering alternatives to polluting petrodiesel buses. On March 27, 2001, the LAUSD voted unanimously to phase out their diesel bus fleets citing recent findings highlighting the health risks of diesel engines, which are magnified in the developing lungs of young children.
Paul Cochran, President of the School Bus Fleet Managers of Arizona and a fleet maintenance supervisor, recently stated, "We were careful to select a fuel with a proven track record and with definite health and environmental benefits. We have had a wonderful experience with the fuel, and I would recommend it highly to anyone thinking about cleaning up their school buses for the safety of our children."
