April 9, 2001DOE Says Gasoline Prices to Stay Below Summer Records U.S. motorists will pay less for gasoline this summer than the record-high prices of last year, though a fill-up will cost about 27 percent more than in 1999, the government said in an annual forecast.
While U.S. motor-fuel inventories are lower than a year ago, a slowing economy and production increases by refiners will keep average pump prices at $1.49 a gallon this summer, down from $1.53 a year earlier, the U.S. Energy Department predicted.
Gasoline surged last June to a record $1.681 a gallon, on average, and rose above $2 in cities such as Chicago and San Francisco because of supply shortfalls. Prices averaged $1.17 a gallon in 1999. The fuel is more costly now mostly because of higher crude oil prices and stricter clean-air formulas.
``We're unlikely to have a repeat of the unusual number of supply problems we had last year,'' said Sarah Emerson, managing director of Energy Security Analysis Inc., a consulting firm in Wakefield, Massachusetts. ``Even so, inventories are still lean, and we expect strong gasoline prices.''
Gasoline prices nationwide surged last year as production cuts by members of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries pushed crude oil prices to a 10-year-high.
