March 30, 2001Midwest refiners see good green gasoline supply-EPA Oil refiners in the U.S. Midwest have assured the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that summer clean air gasoline regulations will not lead to a repeat of last year's price spike, an EPA source said Thursday.
"Refiners in the Midwest are giving us the green light on the summer RFG (reformulated anti-smog gasoline)," the source said. "They do not foresee any problems, and they are bringing on production of the summer grade as we speak."
U.S. energy drilling spree yields little new supply
A U.S. boom in oil and gas drilling spurred by surging energy prices should at best yield only modest near term gains in energy production, analysts said.
While drilling activity is at its busiest in 10 years as energy companies spend record amounts, steep production declines in the mature U.S. oil and gas patch means net gains in output are proving tough to generate.
Domestic oil production will stay flat at best this year, while gas output will barely rise fast enough to keep up with demand. This will help keep global supplies tight and do nothing to ease U.S. reliance on foreign sources, analysts said Wednesday.
