March 27, 2001Ballard sells fuel cells for DaimlerChrysler buses Ballard Power Systems Inc. said on Monday it had inked a long-waited deal with DaimlerChrysler AG to supply the automaker with fuel cells for 30 buses in 2002 and 2003.
The Mark 900 fuel cells will be integrated into fuel-cell engines designed by XCELLSIS, a joint venture between Daimler, Ford Motor Co. and Ballard, in a project partially backed by the European Union.
Ballard expects the fuel-cell buses to make their debut in 10 European cities for use in transit service beginning in 2002.
"The receipt of an order for fuel cells for commercial buses marks a major milestone for Ballard," said Firoz Rasul, Ballard chief executive and chairman.
"DaimlerChrysler and its customers in Europe are leading the way in adoption of zero-emission fuel-cell technology," added Rasul.
