March 9, 2001Senators urge Bush to enforce oxygen fuel rule in Calif A group of farm state senators on Thursday urged the Bush administration to block California's request for a waiver allowing it to bypass federal requirements for oxygen content in fuel.
Senate Democratic Leader Tom Daschle said in a letter to President George Bush that granting California a waiver would do little to improve the state's air quality and environmental problems stemming from a fuel additive called MTBE.
The letter was also signed by Democrats Tom Harkin of Iowa, Kent Conrad of North Dakota and Tim Johnson of South Dakota.
"Granting such a waiver would be a major setback for the Nation's ethanol fuel industry, our farmers and our clean air and renewable energy policies," the Democratic senators said.
