June 29, 2000Federal Trade Commission Subpoenas Gasoline Refiners The Federal Trade Commission has begun issuing subpoenas to gasoline refiners and other segments of the oil industry in its investigation of high gasoline prices in the U.S. Midwest, FTC Chairman Robert Pitofsky said Wednesday.
"The objective is to determine who raised prices, and whether there was any illegal contact, communication or signaling among competitors before or during the time of the price increases," Pitofsky said at a House Commerce Committee on gasoline prices.
MIDWEST GASOLINE PRICES UNDER MICROSCOPE
Gasoline prices across the nation dropped a few pennies a gallon this week for the first time since early May. Midwest fuel costs still remain the highest in the country.
Energy Secretary Bill Richardson said the downward price movement was not yet a "trend" but was a step in the right direction. He told the same congressional committee that the administration cannot see any reason why prices had shot up and then declined so rapidly in the Midwest.
Oil companies blame the Midwest's high prices on the Environmental Protection Agency's mandate that new reformulated gasoline be sold in the region to fight pollution.
"Throughout the entire gasoline price crisis, ethanol has helped keep the consumer cost of gasoline from going even higher," said Vaughn. "Ethanol reformulated gasoline is the lowest priced, highest quality fuel on the market in the Midwest today. The people who sought to unfairly blame ethanol for the high Midwest gasoline prices should now explain how
ethanol helps reduce the cost of fuel."
