January 31, 2001Saudi Alujain plans $425 mln iso-octane project Saudi Arabia's Alujain Corp said on Monday it planned to build a 900,000 tonnes per year iso-octane project in the kingdom at a cost of $425 million.
The company said in a statement its board of directors had in December approved the project which Alujain said would soon replace methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) as a clean gasoline booster component.
It said Alujain had signed a memorandum of understanding with U.S. firm Noble Americas, a subsidiary of Noble Group, to jointly carry out the development of the project.
"The building of the project is initially estimated to cost around $425 million and is expected to come on stream in the first half of 2004," the statement said.
It made no mention of the fate of a planned $425 million MTBE plant which has been on hold since late 1998 following moves to phase out the oxygenate enhancer from the gasoline pool in the United States due to groundwater contamination.
