Ethanol Industry Surges to All-Time Annual and Monthly Production Records in 2000

"With our country facing its most serious energy crisis in over 20 years, ethanol answered the call," says Renewable Fuels' Eric Vaughn

The Renewable Fuels Association (RFA) has announced that the domestic ethanol industry has set new all-time annual and monthly production records in 2000. According to data released today by the Department of Energy's Energy Information Administration (EIA), the ethanol industry produced 1.63 billion gallons of ethanol in 2000, up from 1.47 billion gallons in 1999. A new monthly record of over 113,000 barrels per day (b/d) was also set in December, exceeding the previous monthly record of 111,000 b/d set last October.

"With our country facing its most serious energy crisis in over 20 years, ethanol answered the call," said Eric Vaughn, president of the RFA. "Even as oil imports reached record highs and OPEC exercised renewed clout, the ethanol industry increased production by over 10 percent in 2000. The ethanol industry met the challenge in 2000 and is committed to expanding production to meet consumers' needs in the future."

The 160 million gallon increase in ethanol production over 1999 marked the second largest annual increase in 15 years.

"Last year was a banner year for the ethanol industry," said Vaughn. "But 2001 will witness the opening of several additional ethanol plants. Ethanol's market share will continue to grow in California, Pennsylvania, and across the country. The ethanol industry will play an integral role in President Bush's domestic energy agenda. Wherever America needs a domestic, renewable, clean fuel - ethanol will be there."
