January 19, 2001Fitzgerald Calls on Agriculture Secretary Nominee ToPromote Greater Ethanol Usage Agriculture Secretary-designate Ann Veneman gestures while testifying on Capitol Hill in Washington, Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, before the Senate Agriculture Committee's hearing on her confirmation.
U.S. Senator Peter G. Fitzgerald (R-Illinois) today called on Agriculture Secretary-designate Ann Veneman to aid Midwestern farmers by promoting greater ethanol usage nationwide, particularly as an environmentally friendlier alternative to MTBE in the nation's clean air program. The senator also urged Veneman to oppose granting her home state of California a waiver exempting it from the Clean Air Act's oxygenate requirement.
Promoting ethanol as a viable fuel additive in the nation's clean air program would be good for our agricultural economy and our environment, Fitzgerald maintained, given recent evidence that MTBE, currently the leading oxygenate in the production of emissions-reducing reformulated gasoline, has contaminated drinking water supplies across the country. While many lawmakers agree that MTBE should be banned, there is disagreement over how best to achieve that goal. Specifically, there is a regional divide between Midwestern lawmakers who want to see a greater role for ethanol in the clean air program and Western and Southern senators who favor MTBE or completely eliminating the oxygenate requirement, a provision in the Clean Air Act requiring urban areas with pollution problems to sell RFG.
"I'd ask for your commitment that you will promote ethanol as an environmentally friendlier alternative to MTBE, and that you would work closely with your counterpart at the EPA to ensure a strong future for ethanol. Can you give this commitment to this committee?" Fitzgerald asked Veneman at her confirmation hearing this morning.
Veneman said President-elect Bush is a strong supporter of ethanol, and assured Fitzgerald that she would work with Congress and the EPA on this issue.
