January 18, 2001OPEC approves big supply cut Ministers of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries gather at the start of meeting at OPEC headquarters in Vienna, Austyria Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001.
OPEC on Wednesday agreed an aggressive five percent reduction in oil supplies, aimed at keeping crude prices afloat near $25 a barrel, and said it could slice output again soon.

The Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries cut 1.5 million barrels a day to cap limits for 10 members at 25.2 million from February.
The United States and the European Union had urged producers to make only a modest reduction. U.S. Energy Secretary Bill Richardson called the decision "disappointing"
