OPEC approves big supply cut

Ministers of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries gather at the start of meeting at OPEC headquarters in Vienna, Austyria Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001.


OPEC on Wednesday agreed an aggressive five percent reduction in oil supplies, aimed at keeping crude prices afloat near $25 a barrel, and said it could slice output again soon.

OPEC took the decision despite fears among major importing nations that it could spell trouble for decelerating economies in the West by raising energy costs again.

The Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries cut 1.5 million barrels a day to cap limits for 10 members at 25.2 million from February.

The United States and the European Union had urged producers to make only a modest reduction. U.S. Energy Secretary Bill Richardson called the decision "disappointing"

Genencor International Signs Exclusive Supply Agreement WithCargill's U.S. Wet Corn Milling Facilities

Genencor International (Nasdaq: GCOR) announced today it has signed an agreement with Cargill to supply all biocatalysts for its wet corn milling facilities in the United States. The five-year exclusive supply agreement, valued at approximately $70 million, extends the companies' longstanding relationship.

"Genencor continues to offer us innovative products and outstanding technical service," said Robert Siegert, vice president of operations for Cargill's North America sweeteners business unit. "We highly value this relationship."
