January 10, 2001Veneman mum on California ethanol issue Caught in the cross fire between national farm groups and her home state of California, U.S. Agriculture Secretary-designee Ann Veneman gave no hint on Tuesday how the incoming Bush administration would rule on a contentious fuel issue, a U.S. senator said.
As part of its plan to phase out MTBE, a fuel additive found in state groundwater supplies, California has asked for a waiver from federal oxygen content requirements for reformulated gasoline, a cleaner-burning fuel required in parts of the country with the worst air pollution.
Corn growers and ethanol producers bitterly oppose the waiver, which would squash a potential huge new market in California and set a precedent for other states.
"She held her cards close to the vest on that," Sen. Peter Fitzgerald, an Illinois Republican, told reporters after a meeting with Veneman. "She just noted that California was seeking the waiver and did not state a position."
