January 8, 2001Novozymes wins US Energy Dept funds Danish industrial enzymes maker Novozymes said on Monday its its U.S. subsidiary Novozymes Biotech has been awarded research funds of up to $14.8 million by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).
"The funding will support research for developing high-efficiency enzymes systems that can reduce the cost of converting plant material into fermentable sugars for the production of fuels and chemicals," Novozymes said in a statement.
The funding will be released over three years, as milestones of the development project are met.
If the enzymes needed to convert biomass into ethanol can be purchased for less than 10 cents per gallon ethanol compared to 45 cents a gallon today the cost of making ethanol for the fuel alcohol industry could drop to 75 cents a gallon, Novozymes said.
